Bio:
Denis Maneno Sikwese, professionally known as Newton18, is a Malawian artist whose musical journey is rooted in passion, perseverance, and a deep connection to the sounds that shaped his early life.
Born on 16 June 1988 at Kaseye Hospital in Chinunka Village, under Traditional Authority Mwaulambya in Chitipa, Malawi, Newton18 was raised in the streets of Mzuzu City, where his love for music began at an early age.
As a young boy, he was already immersed in music—DJing, singing along, and drawing inspiration from artists who would later influence his own sound. His early heroes included Malawian music icon Lucius Banda, alongside international acts such as Sean Paul, Buju Banton, Culture, and Cocoa Tea. Growing up surrounded by dancehall and Afro-soul, Newton18 found in music a language through which he could express himself and connect with others.
In 2009, he took his first major step as a recording artist, recording his debut single at B/K Studio, owned by Billy Kaunda, in Chinyonga. The song was produced by Robert Nello. Although he had the talent and determination, financial limitations made it difficult to promote and sustain his musical ambitions.
Faced with a difficult choice, Newton18 travelled to South Africa to hustle and create the financial foundation needed to pursue his dream. What began as a struggle for survival gradually became part of his artistic journey, giving him experiences, perspective, and stories that would eventually find their way into his music.
Today, Newton18 represents the intersection of ambition, resilience, and lived experience. His journey from the streets of Mzuzu to South Africa is a reminder that sometimes the road to finding your sound begins with simply refusing to give up on your dream.
Years later, that hustle has become sound.
